Robert Garioch was one of Scotland's most distinctive poetic voices. Born in Edinburgh in 1909, he was educated at the university there, and embarked on a teaching career, writing poetry in his free time. His first publication was 'Seventeen Poems for Sixpence (1940), a collaboration with Sorley Maclean, whom he had got to know as a student.
